Community Acupuncture 101: 2-Day Course

Introduction:

Hemma community acupuncture opened its doors in 2007. Located in Victoria BC, Hemma was the first community acupuncture clinic in Canada affiliated with POCA (Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture). At that time we were one of 18 community clinics operating in North America. By 2020, thirteen years later, there were 250 community clinics located throughout North America, offering a combined total of a million treatments annually.

The community clinic model offers tremendous value to the acupuncture profession as a whole, and a tremendous value to our communities, in terms of providing valuable health-care needs. This 2-day workshop will give you the opportunity to learn about the history and beginnings of community acupuncture, why it’s such an effective service delivery model, and how to go about working in, or starting, your own community acupuncture clinic.

Course Objectives:

To explore and understand the history, philosophy, and the fundamentals of community acupuncture, in order to understand its important role within community healthcare and the broader practice of acupuncture. 
 
Study and learn the practical aspects of community acupuncture – the clinical practice and the essential skills involved in patient care, assessment, diagnosis and treatment within a community setting.

Day One – Fundamentals and Systems

Day one will be a combination of lecture and discussion focusing on:

      • History and Philosophy of Community Acupuncture
      • Three Systems of Community Acupuncture: Accessible, Affordable, Effective
      • CA Business Planning and Marketing Strategies

Day Two – Clinical Practice

Day two will be a combination of lecture, demonstration, and practice that will focus on:

      • Client-centred acupuncture
      • Effective and efficient intake
      • Review of Channel Based Acupuncture
      • Holding space, safety, patience confidentiality
      • Developing effective treatment strategies

ABOUT MICHAEL HALL, R.Ac

Registered Acupuncturist

 

Michael has been a practising acupuncturist since 2004, he has worked in a community clinic since 2007. In their practice, they have accumulated more than thirty years of study in the fields of Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Massage, Yoga Therapy, and Addictions, all of which inform their practice.

Michael studied Acupuncture in San Francisco and Victoria, B.C. They have served on the faculty of the Canadian College of Acupuncture, and the Pacific Rim College. They have also served on the Board of the Community Acupuncture Network (now POCA),

In addition to their clinical practice they also serve as an advisor and mentor, providing education and support to people interested in establishing CA clinics in their communities.
